Choose the place before the pieces

Use a surface that can support the actual load and keep the display back from its edge. Check doors, drawers, chair movement and the route people use with shopping bags or laundry. A photo may suggest a tall stack; in a busy home, a low single layer is often easier to manage.

Protect and inspect the surface

Use a stable, washable tray or a suitable protective barrier for your furniture, then test that it does not slip or trap moisture. Do not place damp soil, wet leaves or leaking fruit directly on wood, textiles or porous stone. Lift the arrangement regularly to check underneath; a tray does not remove that task.

Design for reachable hands and paws

Remove loose beads, pins, detachable eyes and other small pieces where children or pets can reach them. Keep tools, paints, cords and spare batteries separately secured. Battery lights also need a secure battery compartment. Put heavy or easily tipped objects somewhere inaccessible, rather than relying only on a warning.

Keep light and heat simple

Use suitable battery lighting instead of an open flame near paper, fabric or dry plant material. Follow the light's indoor rating and operating instructions. Keep the arrangement away from heaters and hot appliances. Turn lights off when unattended, and check that access to switches and sockets stays clear.

Give the display a daily place in the routine

Check for wobbling, wet bases, soft spots or leaking whenever you clean the room. Remove damaged fruit and clean and dry its support. If the display has to move for meals or play, use fewer pieces on a manageable tray. Store decorative supplies away before preparing food on the same table.
