Buy well and bring pumpkins home intact

A practical shopping and transport routine, from checking the underside to unloading without lifting by the stem.

Prepare a small shopping note

Write down the display footprint, preferred roles and maximum quantities. Check what trays and containers you already own. Take a tape measure and choose a smaller fruit if you cannot comfortably handle the larger one. Plan help or a suitable cart before buying something that you cannot lift safely.

Check the whole fruit

Ask to see the underside as well as the attractive face. Look for firm skin without soft spots, leaking or deep damage, and inspect the stem area. Natural surface marks can differ from broken skin; if uncertain about damage, choose another fruit. Do not assume a discount makes a damaged fruit suitable for storage.

Confirm how it is priced

Establish whether the price is per fruit or per unit of weight. Compare totals for the actual pieces, not only the sign. Ask separately whether a pumpkin is sold for eating and whether it has been treated for display. Keep kitchen purchases separate from painted or otherwise treated decorative fruit.

Support, cushion and secure

Carry from underneath; the stem is not a handle. Use a box or crate that fits, with dry cushioning to reduce rolling and rubbing. Do not pile heavy pumpkins onto smaller ones. Secure the container in the vehicle so it cannot slide, and keep the driver's view and passenger space clear.

Unpack and inspect

Unload with the same support under the fruit. Remove wet packaging, check new dents or cracked skin, and place sound whole fruit on a dry, stable surface. Clean dirt from the supporting area. Set aside damaged fruit for appropriate disposal rather than hiding it inside the display, then update the shopping list with what you actually brought home.
